Why this matters

Maps don’t just describe the ocean. They make it.

An interactive map feels neutral — a window onto what’s really out there. But every map is a stack of choices: which data to show, as points or polygons, in red or in blue, at what scale, within whose borders. Change the choices and you change the ocean the viewer comes to know.

We read 132 maps from 43 ODSIs. Below are two of the clearest cases — where organizations looking at the very same thing built strikingly different ocean worlds.

01 · One protected area

Both maps below show Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, one of the largest protected areas on Earth. One organization draws it as a shape; the other as a dot. Watch what each decision does to how big — and how important — the reserve appears.

A world of coverage

By mapping the monument to its actual spatial extent, MPAtlas makes large reserves prominent — and quietly makes small coastal MPAs vanish at a global scale.

A world of presence

By mapping every MPA as an equal-sized point, Sea Around Us keeps the smallest coastal reserves visible on a global map — but a giant monument now looks no larger than a tiny one.

Where is overfishing a problem?

Three ODSIs map fishing pressure — and answer that question three different ways. Pick an answer and see which map tells that story. There is no single truth here; each map is a choice about where our attention should go.

Across the maps we studied, ODSIs’ choices produced four recurring kinds of ocean — each one shaping which data seem to matter, and which forms of governance seem possible.

These aren’t neutral pictures. They are arguments about “the science we need for the oceans we want” — and ODSIs are among the actors making them.

A note for collaborators

What this is — and what production would change

This is a working prototype: enough to feel the idea and check the DOGL look, not a finished public page. Here’s the honest status.

Already handled here

  • Built on the real DOGL system — the live site’s colors, type, logo and texture, not a mockup.
  • Link-preview cards so the URL unfurls with an image and title when shared.
  • Keyboard focus states on every control, and a written reading that stays available on phones.
  • Compressed imagery for faster loading.

Before a public release

  • Re-capture the maps live. These are the paper’s figures; production would use fresh screenshots of the live tools for clean image rights and current data.
  • Confirm the paper link. The article is forthcoming (August 2026) — verify the DOI resolves before linking it publicly.
  • Drop the prototype framing — this note and the footer label.
  • Fold into dogl.info — publish under the site’s “Our Work” section rather than as a standalone preview.
